Doula Position Overview
At Asante Ashland Community Hospital (AACH), Oregon's first hospital-based alternative birth center offers a private, home-like environment and a sensitive, choice-oriented staff. Beautifully decorated private rooms feature a state-of-the-art birthing bed, entertainment center, refrigerator, bay window seat, and other comfortable touches. We maintain a good balance between high technology and high touch, incorporating current equipment with a wide variety of personal choices
The Doula is a valued member of the team at AACH responsible for providing continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and just after the childbirth experience.
What You'll Do
Provide physical, informational, and emotional support, such as massage, suggestions for position changes, and compassionate words of encouragement
By relaxing and calming the mother, you participate in an experience where labor progresses more rapidly and with less interventions.
Help guide the new mother through her first breastfeeding experience
Participate in quality and/or process improvement activities as requested
Attend meetings and participates on committees as requested
Who You Are
Your knowledge base includes accreditation standards and best practices related to patient centered care
You understand the phases and stages of labor and are able to read patient cues on what works for support and encouragement at various points while considering patient preference
You have the skill and ability to access a repertoire of tools that is helpful to women in labor
You have the ability to work within the hospital system and in a team environment where you have the opportunity to function as part of the birth team that includes the registered nurses and physicians
What You Must Have
Prior experience attending births
Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon start
ONE of the following is required:
Birth Doula Certification by DONA International
Certified Professional Birth Doula by to Labor International
Full Circle Doula Training Certification by the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC)
Doula Certification from the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA)
Certified Professional Labor Doula by ProDoula
