Position Summary

Chaplains are professionally trained spiritual care providers who provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff during their time in the hospital and/or hospice setting. They offer spiritual support, spiritual counsel, and comfort as part of total holistic care. They use their skills to help individuals find meaning, purpose, and connection in their lives, as well as spiritual histories to determine the importance of the patient's religious practices and faith community connection. Chaplains are also spiritual specialists who conduct spiritual assessments to determine if a patient is in spiritual distress, create a spiritual plan of care, and chart this information for the treatment team. Chaplains may also provide prayer and ritual support for patients/families that request it; provide guidance and development to departmental volunteers; and may assist with training.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of spiritual care experience.

ONE of the following is required:

  • Undergraduate theological degree, or
  • Minimum two units of Clinical Pastoral Education, or
  • Minimum three years of related spiritual care experience may be considered in lieu of undergraduate theological degree, or
  • Equivalent education and experience providing an in-depth knowledge of spiritual and emotional support in a clinical setting.

Also required:

  • Letter from local religious community leader which (1) verifies good standing with local religious community and (2) confirms support to function in a ministry of spiritual care; OR Ordination/ Commissioning with recognized religious/ spiritual faith group to function in a ministry of spiritual care.

Please Note: For Chaplain positions with Hospice Services, possession of a valid Driver's License with proof of safe driving record for the past ten years and proof of insurance is required. Must have Oregon Driver's License within 30 days of moving to Oregon (if applicable).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP), Association of Certified Christian Chaplains (ACCC), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or other nationally recognized certifying body.
