POSITION SUMMARY

The Health Information Management Specialist I ensures all patient health information is accurately stored in the electronic medical record imaging system. This includes transporting, prepping and quality checking paper documentation for scanning and indexing into the electronic medical record. This position may complete data integrity validation and correction requiring proficiency in multiple software applications, and ultimately preserving the integrity of the health record. As the Medical Record department transitions to an electronic health record, this position also includes minimal functionalities of pulling, filing, delivery of the paper medical record in addition to other duties as assigned.

As a Health Information Management Specialist I, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide high quality customer service in the form of telephone answering, interaction with physicians and other customers
  • Work with various computer software/hardware systems to achieve optimal work performance
  • Accurately prepare medical record documents for manual scanning into the electronic medical record document imaging system by organizing and sorting a multitude of record forms
  • Accurately scan/index/Quality check all patient encounter types in the document imaging system
  • Maintain integrity of daily discharges by developing an accurate, daily accounting of records received
  • Provide access to patient medical records for continuity of patient care
  • Provide support and quality service to all customers while demonstrating a personal responsibility for ensuring a positive work environment

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate as required for the position
  • Associate Degree in Health Information Management, Computer Science, or other related program, preferred
  • Completion of coding program, preferred
  • Completion of health data or medical language specialist program, preferred
  • Courses in anatomy and disease process or equivalent, preferred

Experience

  • Office experience is required

Licensure/Certifications

  • RHIT: Registered Health Information Technician, preferred
  • RHIA: Registered Health Information Administrator, preferred

Required Skills

  • Must be detail oriented, self-disciplined and organized
  • Ability to interact with physicians and other staff in a professional and effective manner
